End of term BBQ

Everyone is invited to our end of term BBQ on Hele Beach, next Thursday 25th July, 7-8.30. We have a couple of awards to give out but it is mainly a chance to have some fun in the sun together before we say goodbye for the summer. Please let us know if you’re coming by emailing families are welcome too – food will available at low low prices for non-members.

Gilwell Park 2014 – Up for the adventure?

Come and join us at the home of Scouting, Gilwell Park. Scouts from all over the world come here and it is considered a pilgrimage. An amazing array of activities are on offer from the 3G swing, to climbing to an adventure course, and we will cram in as many as we can during our 4 night stay. Places are strictly limited to 30 and as both Cubs and Scouts are invited, you need to secure your place as early as possible. Please sign up using your My.Scout invitation or contact any of the leaders. The most valuable commodity that anybody can give a scout group is time and we always need somebody to do just that.

Perhaps you’d like to be a leader, administrator or skills instructor?


Being a leader is fun. Everything can go wrong… your best laid plans can fall away but still you and your kids can have a brilliant night.

Some people do it to add to their CV, others do it to give something back to the community. It is an exciting challenge and I have never seen a night run perfectly… that is part of the fun.

So… could you help us?

  • None of our Leaders are paid – they are all volunteers.
  • The majority of our Leaders have full time jobs and a family.
  • 50% of our Leaders are female.
  • Leaders get involved because they want to have fun and make new friends.
  • Leaders don’t have to be ‘superheroes’ who know everything. They are given training on the job and learn new skills as they go along. The one thing that unites our Leaders is the energy and enthusiasm they have for giving young people the adventure of Scouting
  • 27% of volunteers help out in Scouting as they are a parent of a current Member. Many were not Scouts when they were young but have learnt new skills and made new friends through Scouting.
  • Many of our adult volunteers say they are more confident in their everyday lives as a result of their involvement with Scouting.
  • All our Leaders are covered by a comprehensive insurance policy while taking part in Scouting.

Group AGM ….

In the next couple of weeks we will be announcing the date of the Group AGM.  It is likely to be sometime towards the end of June.  Hopefully we will be having a fun family afternoon where you can come down and see the things that your children have been up to in the last year and to talk with us about the types of activities we are going to be planning for the next school year.

It is also the time for us to show you our financial position and to elect members of our Group Executive Committee.  The committee meets about every 3 months and aims to make sure that the Scout Group has the facilities and resources needed to deliver good Scouting in the Group. This includes:

  • the maintenance of the Group’s property and equipment
  • the raising of funds and the administration of the Group’s finance
  • the insurance of persons, property and equipment
  • Group public occasions
  • assisting with the recruitment of Leaders and other adult support

We always have places available for parents to help us out on the Group Exec and we would love to discuss your offers of help.  In advance of the Group AGM, if you have a little time you can spare us and want to help – please get directly in contact with me at the following email address ( and I will get back to you to understand how we can best use your talents.

St. Georges Day Parade

Last Sunday we had our annual St. Georges Day parade in Barnstaple.  The Group only takes part in two parades a year, St. Georges and Remembrance Day – andI am pleased to say that we had a good turn out for this one.  Approximately 50% of the Group participated in the parade – our Scouts, Cubs and Beavers looking very smart and making the Group proud.  Every Group in North Devon was represented, with some special VIP guests including various Mayor’s and representatives from the Police.  In total there were about 500 people present and there was standing room only in the church.  Special mentions at the ceremony included the Cubs who attended our recent camp, they were asked to come up to the front and collect a special woggle made by our District Commissioner (Andy Ellis) and also to Roy Imeson who has attained the 5 year service award for the Group.

Camp Success

Two fantastic camps took place this weekend at Mullacott Farm. The Scout Patrol leaders and assistants got back to basics with a greenfield camp while the Cub Sixers and Seconders had a some creature comforts on the main site. Both groups had a chance to try some new skills, including cooking their own meals and catapult building, and their experience will be invaluable in helping younger members in full section camps later in the summer. The Beavers also got involved when they came to visit the Cubs and pitch Kaa’s tent before joining us for some yummy toasted marshmallows.

Our Scout Hut

As I am sure you are aware, we have been having some significant issues with the structural stability of our Scout Hall. In the last few months we have had to vacate the hall as it has not been safe to use. The Group employed a structural surveyor who completed a report as to the extent of the problems with the building; this has allowed us to go to builders and find out the amount of money it would require to make the necessary reparations to bring the building up to modern standards. In the last few weeks those quotes have come back to the Group Executive Committee so that we could make a decision as to the way forward.

It is with great sadness and regret that I have to inform you that the amount of money is beyond what the Group could ever afford (even with the generosity of other grant making bodies) and the decision has been taken to sell the hall to someone who can make the necessary repairs or redevelop the property.

In the meantime, we will continue to meet at the Trinity Hall for Beavers/Scouts and “Pip & Jim’s” for Cubs. The Group Executive are currently looking at a number of options for the longer term to give our Group a permanent home, but unfortunately it is going to take us some time to finalise it.

We are always on the lookout for new leaders, skills instructors or committee members. Were you in the Scouts as a kid, or maybe you were a Scouting Leader and your looking to get back into Scouting or maybe you would just like to try something new? You will be given full training and its FREE…

Recycling Appeal

Recycle your printer cartridges and raise funds for the 1st Ilfracombe Scout Group

Dear Parents & Guardians,
We have recently become a member of the Recycling Appeal. Not only does recycling protect the environment, it can also raise money for our Scout group.
Please would you bring into Beavers, Cubs or Scouts any used inkjet or toner printer cartridges. We can send them to the Recycling Appeal and exchange them for cash.
Please ask friends and family to give their used cartridges to you. Even ask at work if you can have their old cartridges. The more we collect the more money we will raise to spend on activities for our children.
This is an on-going appeal which means anytime you have used cartridges please bring them in.
We can accept all original manufacturer inkjet and toner cartridges except for Epson, Xerox and Kodak. Unfortunately we cannot send back compatibles.
